Lottery Scam Alert
It works like this: A victim receives a letter informing them they've won a
lottery jackpot. A check is enclosed and the victim is instructed to pay the
taxes on their winnings by cashing the check and wiring a portion of the
money back to the sender. The victim later finds out the check was a
counterfeit and they have been cheated out of the money they wired.
What can you do to protect yourself?
- Don't send anyone money to pay taxes owed on a
lottery. Legitimate lotteries deduct taxes from the
winnings before sending out the remainder.
